At Our Rescue, Human Trafficking Prevention Month is a time of heightened prevention-focused action, bringing greater attention to trafficking while strengthening survivor-centered solutions to confront this global human rights crisis.
Why January Is Human Trafficking Prevention Month
January became National Human Trafficking Prevention Month following a presidential proclamation in 2010. This designation builds on the foundation of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, which established the United States’ long-term commitment to addressing modern slavery, protecting every victim, and prosecuting traffickers.

In January 2026, Our Rescue partners with the Blue Campaign to raise awareness and fight human trafficking in our community. The Blue Campaign trains the public, law enforcement, and industry partners to recognize trafficking signs and respond effectively. Together, Our Rescue and the Blue Campaign provide resources, conduct outreach, and take action to prevent human trafficking while protecting survivors.
Understanding Human Trafficking and Why Prevention Matters
Understanding human trafficking is essential to prevention. Human trafficking, falling under the umbrella term of modern-slavery,, includes both labor trafficking and sex trafficking. It involves coercion, fraud, or manipulation to exploit a potential victim for profit.
According to global estimates cited by the U.S. Department of State, millions of people—including children—are trapped in trafficking situations worldwide, including child sex trafficking, sexual exploitation, prostitution, and other forms of commercial sex act exploitation.

Traffickers often target vulnerable populations, exploiting instability caused by poverty, conflict, disasters, or displacement. A human trafficker may use deception, emotional control, or threats of violence and sexual assault to maintain control over human trafficking victims.
