On May 30, a North Dakota judge sentenced predator Nicholas Morgan-Derosier to 40 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to seven criminal charges tied to possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

Jib, an Electronic Storage Detection (ESD) K9 supported by OUR Rescue, helped the Grand Forks Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations find key evidence during a secondary search at Morgan-Derosier’s home. Working with the North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigations, Jib indicated on a tablet.

On the device, authorities found a password that broke the encryption to Morgan-Derosier’s phone, which led to the finding of CSAM. At least five other devices found by law enforcement contained CSAM as well, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of North Dakota.

At the time of his arrest, the 36-year-old man possessed more than 6,000 files – images and videos – of CSAM, which included his family members. Authorities also found chat history where the North Dakota man talked about raping a few of them.

Additional evidence at Morgan-Derosier’s sentencing showed that he raped or sexually assaulted several other individuals when they were minors. Prosecutors have identified 11 survivors from CSAM so far, but they are looking for more.

The investigation was initially focused on Morgan-Derosier’s lawn service business potentially engaging in fraudulent activity. However, when CSAM was found, the focus of the investigation changed.
