In Boone County, Kentucky, investigators followed a digital trail that led them to a home in Florence, where online activity linked to a man suspected of sharing child sexual abuse material (CSAM), previously referred to as child pornography.
After building a careful case, detectives arrived at the suspect’s residence in December and began a thorough search, working carefully through the home to locate and document electronic devices that could hold critical evidence of the child exploitation. Alongside the investigative team was a critical partner – Our Rescue-Sponsored Electronic Storage Detection (ESD) K9 Mo, trained to locate digital devices that suspects may hide from police.
As the search progressed, detectives moved through boxes and personal belongings, clearing items one by one. At one point, a box had already been searched and set aside. But K9 Mo continued to alert on it.
Rather than dismiss the alert, Mo’s handler, Lieutenant Christian, went back and searched the box again, this time taking a closer look. Inside, they discovered small Bluetooth-enabled devices that had been overlooked during the initial search.
Detectives continued their work at the scene, ultimately recovering numerous electronic devices and media storage. The suspect was arrested and reports from Boone County Sheriff’s Office say he admitted to downloading and sharing exploitative material involving children, leading to multiple charges related to possession and distribution.
As technology advances, so do the avenues for predators to access and exploit innocent children while also concealing it. Every day, devices are becoming smaller, easier to hide, and more difficult to find without the right support.
ESD K9 Mo’s find on this case serves as a powerful reminder of that reality. What may have been missed on a typical search was discovered because of this special dog’s persistence that brought investigators back to it.
Because sometimes, the difference between what is found and what is missed comes down to trusting a different kind of partner and going back one more time.
