Charity, one of the 100 Electronic Storage Detection (ESD) K9s supported by OUR Rescue, has been working with the Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Special Victims Unit of the Kentucky Office of the Attorney General since March.
In just a few months on the job, the two-year-old Labrador Retriever has helped law enforcement on multiple search warrants.
One of those was in the case of Zachary King, a former pastor at Lexington City Church. In July, authorities arrested the 47-year-old after he reportedly admitted to engaging in a sexual relationship with a minor for about 18 months.
King told the Kentucky DCI that the relationship began when the minor was 15 years old, according to an arrest citation.
The citation also states that King used Snapchat and WhatsApp to communicate with the minor, which included the exchange of child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
King faces charges for rape, sexual abuse, sodomy, and procuring or promoting use of a minor by electronic means.
Toward the end of May, Charity helped the Kentucky State Police (KSP) apprehend John and Myra Elam for crimes involving the use of CSAM.
The KSP Electronic Crime Branch began investigating the couple after discovering that they shared CSAM on a social media account. Authorities then executed a search warrant – with Charity’s assistance – at the couple’s home in Rowan County, roughly an hour outside of Lexington.
Police arrested both individuals. Now, they face 15 charges related to possession of CSAM.
