Give them hope this season

For people trapped in situations of sex trafficking or exploitation, the holidays aren’t always joyful. These crimes do not take a break. But this holiday season, there’s something you can do.

We’re highlighting the plight of people who are trafficked and exploited by family members, intimate partners, employers, and sometimes even strangers.

We need you to see them – to recognize who this issue is affecting – and then take action to give them hope.

Human trafficking is a profound crisis that can affect anyone, but sadly disproportionately impacts children, teens, people with disabilities, and those facing housing insecurity. Black, Indigenous, migrant, and LGBTQ+ communities are at a heightened risk for human trafficking, with LGBTQ+ youth especially at risk of sex trafficking. Predators exploit gaps created by racial and social disparities, as well as the desperation that comes from housing instability.

Addressing this issue requires more than recognition; it demands action to give hope to those in need. Only together can we create a future where everyone is safe from exploitation.

Cast off by their families and discriminated against by law enforcement, LGBTQ+ youth are disproportionately affected by human trafficking, particularly sex trafficking. The Polaris Project found that LGBTQ+ people are some of the most likely to be trafficked.

Black, indigenous, and migrant populations are disproportionately affected by human trafficking. As a result, addressing human trafficking requires acknowledging racial disparities and addressing systemic issues that contribute to vulnerable people.

Most of us take a safe and stable home for granted. People with housing insecurity risk of becoming victims of both sex and/or labor trafficking. The odds that an unhoused person will be trafficked are considerably higher than a person with a secure place to live.

Experts estimate that 41% of trafficking is facilitated by family members or caregivers.
(International Organization for Migration)

Familial trafficking happens when a family member forces another family member to do involuntary labor—such as sex exploitation or servitude—and someone else in the family controls the proceeds. There’s a heightened risk of familial trafficking for children, teens, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable adults.
