At the end of 2025, Our Rescue’s Latin America team came together with the Ecuadorian National Police (ENP) Anti-Trafficking Unit (UNAT) and the Attorney General’s Office (FGE) to execute Operation FENIX 256, a joint effort that would span multiple regions and confront a criminal network known for human trafficking and exploitation.

This is the story of a teenage girl whose dream of becoming a baker became a nightmare instead.

Many cases of human trafficking and child exploitation begin with false promises and predators who latch onto an individual’s vulnerabilities, courting their hopes and dreams with the promise of a better life or a new job that will provide for one’s family. Sometimes individuals travel from one end of the world to the other, in pursuit of a dream.

A 17-year-old Ecuadorian girl had been caught in the web of this criminal network, enticed by false promises of legitimate employment at a bakery. The reality was that she had unknowingly stepped into a world in which she would be exploited and, trafficked from one location to the next. Instead of an exciting adventure, a new job, and a steady income, the girl was moved city to city, sexually exploited in exchange for payments ranging from $50 to $100 USD, all of which went to her captors.

On the morning of the rescue operation, police arrested a suspect who had allegedly been using his position of trust and authority in the community to exploit the young girl. During the search warrant, ENP-UNAT seized five cell phones and one laptop, which investigators continue to analyze as part of this ongoing case.

Our Rescue is proud to have supported this operation, providing logistical and technical assistance to the ENP-UNAT. This assistance helped facilitate law enforcement efforts to locate survivors and carry out the investigation without delay.

Behind every case like this is a real person whose trust was betrayed. Operation FENIX 256 reveals how the promise of legitimate work can turn abruptly into a pathway that criminals use to isolate and exploit children. It demonstrates how quickly traffickers target and manipulate vulnerable individuals, preying on their hopes and dreams. What happened to this 17-year-old is real and occurs every day, in communities around the world.

Operation FENIX 256 also confirms that rescue is possible. When the Ecuadorian government, law enforcement, and Our Rescue came together to bring down this criminal network, they helped ensure that 17-year-old girl is safe and on the road to healing. With the help of Our Rescue, she is receiving care in a government-run residential shelter.

Today, because of the quick and effective actions of this collaborative field operation, she can continue to dream and plan for her future.

Her hopes and dreams – like those of many children around the world – depend on strategic, highly coordinated efforts in the field and sustained survivor care that can begin immediately once a survivor is found. Operations like FENIX 256 are possible because of generous contributions from our donors. Support for operations like this helps strengthen the capabilities and agility of teams on the ground, and ensures they act quickly with not a second spared.

You can help fund rescue operations like Operation FENIX 256 today.
