“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” That was the philosophy behind Bella’s gift from her father. “My dad got me a book this Christmas that talked about how to start a business and make a lot of money,” says the 11-year-old.
“Dad” told Bella he would help her get started in a business, but he said she needed to donate a part of what she made to a charity that makes a difference. That part was easy for Bella. She had just seen Tim Ballard talking about Operation Underground Railroad on the Glenn Beck show and wanted to help rescue trafficked children. Today, ten percent of every sale goes to O.U.R.
Bella Essentials is a joint venture between father and daughter. “There’s a lot of research on my end,” says Bella’s father, Josh. “Tuesdays we go to a farmer’s market out by Philadelphia. For the past two months Bella and I have been in shopping malls and unfortunately only broke even. So it’s been tough the last few months but she has a bunch of street fairs and other events lined up.”
Bella likes the idea of running her own business and hopes to make enough money so her mom can quit work and stay home with her and her two siblings. But why fragrances?” I really love fragrances and candles. Bath & Body Works has fragrances and they’re doing really well,” says Bella.
People are not only attracted to the fragrances but also to the charity Bella is supporting. Operation Underground Railroad is a nonprofit charity that literally rescues trafficked children and returns them to their homes or safe houses.
“The biggest donation we’ve been able to give so far was in December, which was over $170,” says Josh. Our goal is to get our donation up to $1000 to save one child. Hopefully, by the end of the year, if all goes well, we can bring on some other people and actually fund an entire mission.”
With Josh’s background in retail management and Bella’s commitment to making the best fragrance soaps and candles they may well reach their goal. Bella says, “if you have a passion for something, make it happen.” Good advice. You can check out her website at BellaEssentials.com for more information.
And what would Bella tell those victims that O.U.R. rescues? “Welcome home,” she says. “Welcome home.”
