Bruce* (name changed), 8 years old, was really shy at first. When our Aftercare team first met him, he didn’t open up right away. He lives in one of our partnering aftercare homes because he was recently rescued from human trafficking.
Bruce’s parents died when he was very young, so he ended up in the care of a stepfather. He was forced to become a house slave. He woke up at 3 am every morning, cooked breakfast, and wasn’t able to go to bed until midnight. If he didn’t perform his duties, he was beaten.
One night, his traffickers reached a breaking point of unnecessary frustration. Bruce had messed up dinner, so they poured scalding hot water all over his legs as a punishment. After that, his traffickers didn’t want him anymore, so they sold him across the border into another country. Luckily, the police found him by intercepting the messy transition. Bruce was rescued and placed in a wonderful aftercare home.
O.U.R. is currently preparing to bring humanitarian aid and is partnering with the aftercare home to build a new vocational training center. We believe in empowering youth so they will have employable skills when they leave aftercare homes. We are also working with Inside Sales to send laptops to help the law enforcement continue their case work in this area. We are grateful to provide aid in ways that are unique to each country and aftercare home that we work with.
When aftercare is performed properly and children receive the appropriate care and attention they need, they can really flourish. Bruce is only 8 years old, was tortured while working as a servant, AND he is still able to flourish and grow in confidence in his aftercare home.
One day, the Aftercare director of Bruce’s home showed him a microphone and how to use it. Bruce loves to sing. Once he got ahold of the microphone, he started to sing all the time. He put on a little show for our Aftercare team when they visited, and he sang loud and proud! His shyness quickly melted away. Our Aftercare team said, “We look forward to hearing him sing again on our next visit!”
Aftercare gives kids like Bruce the voice they have always wanted and deserved. Each child rescued has such a potential to grow and develop their talents, and we are grateful to play a part in helping them let their personalities shine through.
